Practicing is Homework

Anyone involved with a performing organization knows that it takes consistent, regular amounts of practice. Being involved with the band program requires a regular, consistent amount of practicing AT HOME to attain the level of performance that is needed. Students involved with the band should be practicing 30/45 minutes everyday to improve their fundamental playing skills.

This regular practicing will vastly improve the students own playing ability and will increase the students desire to practice. It will also vastly improve the performance level of the total band program due to the practicing at home.

The students should be practicing the following:
1. Fundamental techniques:
A. Developing a focused and centered tone.
B. Scales {ALL Major Scales}.
C. Chromatic Scales.
D. Rhythmic Exercises.
E. Intonation (playing in tune).

2. Method Books (Books used in class).
3. Band Music (Music working on in class).
4. Solos, Duets, Trios, Ensembles.
5. Sight-reading: Something Everyday.

The students need to remember that "YOU PRACTICE AT HOME, YOU REHEARSE AT SCHOOL". Parents, listen to your son or daughter practice at home. Encourage them to practice at home. Encourage them to perform in outside activities such as church ensembles. This practicing at home will enhance their own playing ability and will also help their grade in band class at school.
